Georgia Southern really needs to follow the Charlton Young hire with another Georgia Tech assistant coach hire, this one being Giff Smith as the next head football coach. The University took the formula for success and discarded it, now bring it back! Look at what Tech has done in less than two seasons and hire a coach who will bring passion, discipline, and wins back to the football program – a team that can compete for championships, not just struggle to stay at .500. Even if mediocrity on the field is ok with you, as fans, you should be ashamed at the rotation of players who are recruited and then leave before finishing out a season. Lack of continuity will never translate into success, just as trying to fix something that isn’t broken will not yield positive results. The triple option works, and you can win football games without passing, but good luck winning games without a strong running game. I’ll give Chris Hatcher credit for one thing, he did see the potential in Jason Foster and allowed him to showcase his talent while at the same time turning around the poor job Brian VanGorder did.

Then fire Sam Baker, who is responsible for the only two losing seasons at Georgia Southern since Erk arrived. Yes, Baker did not coach those two seasons, but he made the move to release two sound football coaches and replace them with interim head coaches who had zero ability to motivate.

thomsoneagle have you ever heard of patience... the offense is an equalizer with talent- the question you should ask yourself is: Do you want GSU to settle for a kid when they can recruit one on par with your APP State's... Montana's... 1AA today is almost Division 1...it's not like it was 10-15yrs ago where there was a huge disparity...

Hatcher was in the middle of recruiting his players to run his offense- there is a reason he was sucessful at West Georgia & Valdosta State and will be again at Murray State...

Please don't run the TRIPLE OPTION- it is a high school offense that has run it's course...

Please don't bring back the triple option... it has run it's course... you acted impatiently and let Hatcher go- only giving him 2-3 yrs to clean up the mess from VanGorder...you are further digging a hole... The option is a high school offense- let it go away!!! Once upon a time GSU aspired to go D1 and got cold feet and stayed in 1AA... Again please don't bring back the option... your second mistake was hiring the guy from Tech- when will you learn...

GSU Grad '91.

Actually, Baker has been at the helm of al three of our losing season. He has done okay at capitol improvement, but the color red should never have been allowed in Paulson Stadium paint those brick Georgia Southern Blue.

From what I was told Baker bought some land in Colorado when we went out to play CSU in '07. If that's true, he needs to move on out there.

I have started a group on facebook to bring the option back. Also, I am going to start a petition and present it to the president of the university.

You have a guy that knows the triple option and was a part of the GSU coaching staff that averaged over 35 points a game...He is living in the boro already...Mitch Ware.

Sam Baker has ruined the GSU program.PJ warned gsu not to go away from the triple option or spread option.Baker didnt listen and hired a pass happy coach with no running game what so ever. Now we are just what Hatcher said a middle of the pack socon team.Look what happened to nebraska when they quit running to option when is the last time u heard anything about them.Look at g tech and navy before they ran it and look at them now.Why did we stop something that was working?Look at GSU now four years after having quit running the option.Baker needs to swallow his pride fire hatcher and go hire a PJ assistant or former PJ assistant and bring back gsu football.

I completely agree that we should go back to the option offense, that was our identity. The option even helps control the game when the defense looks bad, throwing 50 times a game is flag football and kills the defense if we aren’t scoring –which we aren’t. Now that PJ is doing so well at Tech others around the country will be looking at Navy and Tech assistances to the be next big hire. If we wait, we will just have to pay more for them down the road. I wanted to believe in Hatcher but there is a time in people’s life where they take on more than they are competent to do – him at Southern has shown his incompetence. Hatcher can’t coach or recruit at this level, I am sure he’ll find a D II or III job in a hurry but Southern is D1 and needs a D1 staff.

Is this ga.southern foot ball? 3 yrs and still no better than the bottom 1/2 of the southern conference .we can not recruit or coach them up as paul and erk did . i believe hatcher is over his head in southern conference foot ball . i like sam as a person but do not have any faith in him to run our team . how many coaches can you miss on .

I have said all along...it is the Athletic Adminitration who got us to this point. If you want to look to someone who knows the triple option offense who coached at GSU, you should look to the Navy Staff also. Ivin Jasper, who is now the offensive coordinator for Navy, should be considered. He is doing all the play calling for them. Navy continues to win even though Paul is gone because Paul left good people there to run the program. Navy just beat Wake Forest this past weekend.

I agree with you. You would be shoched how many kids have left over the last 2 years. If a head coach cannot recruit quality players and keep what you recruit winning is impossible.

I realize that GT and Alabama are not in the same class as GSU but they have improved in 2 years after new coaches came in. It doesn.t tke 5 years to build a program. Hatcher had a 6 year contract with 3 more years of misery left for GSU fans.
